- Dogs and Cats do not sweat! They pant to lower their body temperature. The same principle of evaporation is used, but via panting.
- Dogs and Cats also seek cool surfaces to lay to draw heat from their bodies.
So What Does That Mean for Pet Owners & How Can You Keep Your Pet Comfortable?
- Have multiple sources of water. Particularly if the sun is going to warm it through exposure or if you have a water loving dog that is prone to knocking the water bowl over. Dogs and Cats need water to aid their evaporation technique.
- If a floor surface is too hot for you to walk on without shoes, then it is too hot for your pet too! It floors me that I see people walking during the height of summer on the bitumen with shoes on, yet their pets have no protection at all!
- Walk dogs in the cool of the evening or early morning to avoid dehydration
- Try to keep your pet where they have lots of shade and ventilation
- Provide a cool bed for your pet – an elevated dog bed on a frame works for both dogs and cats
4 Novel Ideas to Help Keep Your Pet Cool…
- Kiddie pools are a gem! Pop in the backyard for your pup (or kitty) to take a dip
- Icy Poles are good for all! Make a broth that you can freeze and pop out for your pet to lick and cool down
- Wet an old towel, ring and then freeze. Pop it down for somewhere so your pet can seek it out to sprawl on
- Spray a mist bottle of cool water on the underside of your pet, where there is least amount of hair – under their ‘armpits’, between back legs and tummy – (this works similar to running cold water on your wrists!).
